1. Experience: Opponent Chris Meyers' campaign sign says, "Experience Counts". We think so too. Jim has 42 years working in public service, as a teacher, a schools administrator and currently, as President of the COS Board of Trustees. For the past 22 years, Jim has been a leader, working with budgets, boards and agencies. He has for many years had to make up and follow budgets based frequently on difficult fiscal realities.


2. Getting things done: Jim believes that consensus building is more effective than confrontation. He has learned to develop consensus in his work; for example, he has frequently had to balance the needs of a school board, teachers and parents. He used his consensus-building skills when he worked as part of the team that carefully crafted and passed Measure A in 2005. Measure A provided carefully targeted development funds for COS.

   Through team leadership, successful programs in fire training and nursing have been expanded at COS. The Tactical Fire Training Center in Weed is unique to the area and attracts firefighters from all over the North State. Likewise, the new medical training facility in Yreka brings nursing training up to the level needed to train RNs. These projects show how Jim sees development of partnerships between government, business and the community.



3. Hard work: Jim is retired, but he remains dedicated to public service. Because he's retired, he has the time to do the work - the research and consensus building - that the job of Supervisor requires.


4. Environment: Jim knows that preservation of tourism, recreation and the natural resources that support them is critical to the future of our area. It's also really important to those of us who live here.


5. Jobs: Jim wants our area to be a place where our children can stay because there are jobs for them. Jim will work hard to bring appropriate businesses to Siskiyou county, but not at the cost of the environment. Jim also knows a bad deal when he sees one. He will ensure that Siskiyou County isn't shortchanged when deals are made.


6. Staying in touch with the district: Jim is a grass-roots politician. In building his bottom-up consensus, Jim will want and need input from constituents. But information flow is a two-way street. Jim will make sure that whatever he does, it will be transparent and public. No back-room deals.


7. Business: Jim believes in government as an enabler for business not a barrier. For example, government provides currency for businesses to use, but does not tell businesses what to do with it. Jim believes that businesses in Siskiyou County need to be left alone to the greatest degree possible. When necessary, Jim believes in using incentives to bring more businesses to the county; but at the same time, he believes that both the public and existing businesses must not be put at a disadvantage by such incentives.

   Jim is open to anything that can help Siskiyou County businesses. As a member of College of the Siskiyous Board of Trustees, Jim has seen first-hand the value of public/private partnerships. Jim has supported COS participation with private businesses. For example, COS can provide training facilities for business and even tailor parts of its curriculum to accommodate the special needs of local businesses.

   Jim also ecnourages and recognizes local businesses in the special role they play as good citizens of the county, supporting local events and causes.

Probably the most valuable thing you can do is spread the news about Jim to your friends and acquaintances. In this area, a successful campaign depends heavily on word-of-mouth.

Another thing that requires no time at all is for you to have us put up a lawn sign visible from the street. We have lots of signs and they are very important to the campaign. It tells your visitors and friends who you support. Having many signs on a block creates the perception that Jim is the favorite, and that will influence many voters to vote for him.
